KARAUT

The Karaut is a spiritual representation, worn by male elders
during important ceremonies.  In days gone by this was a war
decoration; in more recent times this piece would be worn
around a tribal elder's neck, always on the back,
until the appropriate moment--when the wearer would bite
the back tab, bringing this decoration under his nose for a
ferocious visage.  This spirit figure is woven from natural
tree bark string, adorned with cowry shells and boar tusks.
Two of the tusks have fractured, due to the dry California
heat, and  have been repaired.  This piece was one of
several collected for my Los Angeles gallery in the early
1960s.  I have not seen a better Karaut over the years;
 it shows good age, while remaining tight, and may have
been produced pre-WW II.  Measures 12 inches in length,
excluding the feathers.

$650.
